A backup is a one-way transfer from one source to another. If an image is deleted from either source, it will still be available on the other. For example, you might back up your photos to an external hard drive or use a cloud backup tool like FOREVER.

A sync is a two-way synchronization and the images will be available on both sources at the same time. If an image is deleted from one source, it will be deleted from the other.  A common sync is iCloud/Apple Photos.
